Leather jacket and coat repair

Underarm seams, sleeve hems, collars, linings and zips — on leather that a tailor won't touch.

A gash in a red leather sleeve, sewn closed

Leather is stitched, not sewn like cloth: every needle hole is permanent, so a seam has to go back through the holes it came out of or the panel puckers. That is why leather jackets end up at a cobbler's bench rather than an alterations counter.

The photos on this one are unusually complete, because one customer documented a whole armful: a short red jacket with both underarms sewn and a gash in the sleeve closed, the collar cleaned, a long red coat re-hemmed at both sleeves and the collar re-sewn, a Helmut Lang grey leather with a new zip, and a black Prada re-stitched inside and at the underarm.

What the job covers

  • Underarm and shoulder seams re-sewn
  • Tears and gashes closed and backed
  • Sleeve hems shortened or re-hemmed
  • Collars re-stitched and cleaned
  • Linings repaired or replaced
  • Front zips replaced, original pulls kept

Bring it in if…

  • A seam has opened under the arm
  • The lining has torn away from the body
  • The zip won't run or the slider has gone
  • Sleeves are too long, or the hem has come down

Why this page exists: Eighteen leather-jacket photos in the shop's own gallery (Prada, Helmut Lang, red leather jacket and coat), each captioned with the work requested.

They did a great job. I brought in a pair of boots I got at a thrift shop 10 years ago. The soles had come completely unglued from the upper, the heel was worn down, and some of the stitching was coming undone. He replaced the base of the heel, removed the unglued sole to replace it with a much more sturdy and non-slip option, and restitched the leather. They were ready almost a full week before estimated. They look and feel great! I will likely get 10+ more years of wear out of these now.

Glued and stitched toe area. Heavy play had broken the stitching and toe was opening up. $15.

You really need to search to see that this pocket was ever ripped.

Leather Jacket & Coat Repair — questions

Can you shorten leather sleeves?

Yes — sleeve hems on a long leather coat are in the gallery. Bring the jacket and wear the shirt you'd wear under it so the length is set right.

Will the repair show?

On a seam, almost never — it goes back through the original stitch line. On a tear in the middle of a panel it will be visible as a closed seam; Robert will show you what it will look like before he starts.
